Former Capital & Counties Bank building

This purpose-designed bank building was built in 1889 for the Capital & Counties Bank (which was later acquired by Lloyds). It was Grade II listed in 1978.

Lloyds Bank (bank)

Lloyds Bank was established in Birmingham in 1765 by John Taylor and Sampson Lloyd. Its HQ is in London. It operated as Lloyds TSB between 1999 and 2003, after merging with the Trustee Savings Bank. Its black horse logo was inherited from the bank Barnett, Hoare & Co. (est. 1664), which Lloyds acquired in 1884.

This is one of several junctions with side-streets connecting Broad Street with the parallel Friar Street to its north.

Cross Street

Cross Street has long linked Broad Street and Friar Street and appeared on John Speed's map of 1610 with the name 'Gutter Lane'.

Cross Street was pedestrianised in 1997 at the same time as the eastern end of Broad Street. Both streets were later paved with red brick in 2001.
