Nos. 100-102 Broad Street (south side) - 2023

Building & Occupier Details

Building:
Former Arthur Harris building

This building might look as though it should be older, with its timbered balcony above the shop front, but it was actually built in 1902 for confectioner Arthur Harris as a cake shop and café. It presumably incorporated the previous structure as he was able to stay open for business, while the work was underway.

No. 102
Vacant (no occupier)

This property was empty and unused.

2023 - In its third consecutive year of vacancy, No. 102's shop front was painted mostly black by its landlord and 'to let' screen decals placed inside its windows.

Building:
Former Collins & Son building / Grand Cinema

Built in 1905 for butchers Collins & Son, this building was converted into a cinema in 1911 and then a car showroom in 1922. In 1929 it became a café and then served as various shops and banks from 1975 onwards.

Nos. 100-101
Santander UK (bank)

Santander UK is a bank owned by Spain's Banco Santander. It was created in 2010 from the former Abbey National, Bradford & Bingley and Alliance & Leicester banks.

2023 - Minor changes were made to the Santander branch's appearance, but this did not extend to updating the signage to diisplay the 2018 version of the flame logo. Mostly, it enabled them to place a display screen in the window, for which planning consent had been received.
