Nos. 72-73 Broad Street (north side) - 2001

Building & Occupier Details

Building:
Part of the Burton building I (1936)

This building was erected for the menswear firm Burton in 1936 on land left over after the Vine Hotel was demolished for road-widening. It was probably designed by in-house architect Harry Wilson, as it closely resembles his other work. Its foundation stone was laid by Stanley Howard Burton, son of Burton's founder.

No. 73
Designer Sale Shop (clothing retailer - mens & ladies' wear)

Designer Sale Shop was a small chain with a handful of outlets selling discounted branded product from labels such as Polo, Ralph Lauren, DKNY and Ted Baker. It rebranded as Apricot in 2007, switching to 100% own-label products, following a management buyout.

2001 - The Designer Sale Shop continued to occupy the 1936 Burton building (recently vacated by Topshop, which had moved to the Oracle) on a short-term basis.

Building:
Part of Nos. 70-72, Broad Street

This was erected in 1968, replacing two separate older buildings (Nos. 70-71 and No. 72, respectively). It is a typical 1960s concrete rectahedron.

No. 72
