This building, containing two shops, was erected in 1981 to replace the premises of furniture retailer Waring & Gillow, which had burnt to a shell in a fire in 1979 (Waring & Gillow relocated elsewhere).

River Island (clothing retailer - ladies' wear)

River Island was founded as ladies fashion retailer Lewis Separates in 1948. It was renamed Chelsea Girl in 1965 and River Island in 1988.

2011 - Fashion retailer River Island underwent a rebrand, modifying its logo. No. 53's shop front was modified to reflect the new corporate aesthetic.
