This building, containing two shops, was erected in 1981 to replace the premises of furniture retailer Waring & Gillow, which had burnt to a shell in a fire in 1979 (Waring & Gillow relocated elsewhere).

River Island (clothing retailer - ladies' wear)

River Island was founded as ladies fashion retailer Lewis Separates in 1948. It was renamed Chelsea Girl in 1965 and River Island in 1988.

JD Sports (sports retailer)

JD Sports Fashion plc (trading as 'JD Sports') is a sports-fashion retailer established by John Wardle and David Makin in Bury in 1981.

2009 - JD Sports got around to updating the shop front to reflect its current logo and livery. This also involved remodelling its physical design.
