O2 (telecommunications retailer)

Telefonica UK Limited (trading as O2) is a telecoms retailer headquartered in Reading. It was founded in 1984 as Cellnet, a 60/40 joint venture between British Telecom and Securicor. BT bought out Securicor in 1999 and the rebranded O2 was spun off as a separate company in 2002. It merged with Virgin Media in 2021.

2002 - BT's mobile service provider, BT Cellnet, was spun off as a separate company with the new name O2. The Broad Street BT shop became an O2 one, with new branding.
