Building & Occupier Details

Building:
Former H Samuel 'Jewel Centre'

This building was erected in 1966 as an ultra-modern three-storey 'Jewel Centre' for jeweller H Samuel, with a lift between the floors. It replaced two former shops on the site.

No. 50
Homestore (variety retailer)

Home Store was an independent clearance discounter, focussing on home and kitchenware and temporarily occupying the otherwise vacant No. 50.

2023 - Temporary trader Home Store moved into No. 50. It took quite a long time to get around to erecting its own somewhat makeshift signage.

Passage to
Union Street

Nicknamed 'Smelly Alley' on account of the fishmongers', butchers' and greengrocers' shops that used to line it, Union Street was constructed in 1793 as a pedestrian alley linking Broad Street and Friar Street. It remained a private street until 1828.

Damage from a fire at the Friar Street end of Union Street caused the latter to be blocked for many weeks. Access from Broad Street remained open, though.

No. 49
iRepair (mobile phone retailer and/or repairer)

iRepair is a small chain of mobile repair shops established in 2010, which number seven as of 2024. It claims to be the UK's 'leading tech repair specialist.'
